This painting, Grande Odalisque (Dominique Ingres Improvisation) (2021), reimagines Ingres’ reclining figure through a prism of abstraction and fragmentation. The familiar pose of the odalisque remains, yet her body dissolves into streaks of blue, ochre, and translucent layers, destabilizing the polished sensuality of the original. Her gaze, calm yet questioning, becomes an anchor amid the fractured textures.
The composition is filled with tension between clarity and distortion. The left side, where her face and torso emerge, maintains a sense of formality and recognition, while the right side breaks into fluid, gestural strokes. Color becomes both flesh and atmosphere, merging body with environment in an almost dreamlike continuum.
Through this improvisation, the work critiques and transforms the notion of idealized beauty. What was once an exoticized muse is now a shifting, unstable presence—alive, resisting containment, and rendered as both figure and abstraction. The odalisque is no longer an object of possession, but a vision of metamorphosis.
